Rugby World Cup Memories: South Africa vs Australia, 1995

Twenty years ago yesterday, Rugby World Cup 1995 kicked off at Newlands in Cape Town. The hosts, South Africa, were up against RWC 1991 champions, Australia. The Wallaby team was packed with massive names – Lynagh, Campese, Eales, Kearns, Gregan (with hair!), Herbert, Little, and so on – and was expected to win. The South Africans had only returned from isolation in 1992, and with the limited test match calendar of those times had only played a handful of matches in the intervening years, with mixed results.
